Chapter 15

The Star Day Feast

Finally, the creatures of the Ice Land hurried to take their place at the table. Kadazar followed them and found his place beside Evening Star.

“We thank the Stars for this day!” someone cried out, and the member of the Ice Clan began to pile their plates with the mouth-watering food. Kadazar reached out hesitantly and plucked a small, ordinary fish cake. He took a bite.

“Ugh!” he cried out before he could stop himself. “This is so salty! How do you eat this stuff?”

Everyone around the table burst out laughing. Kadazar glared.

“What? What did I do?”

“We put lots of salt in our food, especially the traditional meals. It’s gathered from beneath the ice and is full of minerals, so it helps to strengthen our bodies against the diseases that spread here. Falling ill in this temperature can be deadly,” someone explained from across the table. Kadazar nodded.

“Are there, by any chance, any dishes with slightly less salt?” he asked the creature who had answered.

“Try some of the vegetable ones, and Rasha’s stew,” he replied.

Kadazar sighed and gulped down the rest of the fish cake and ladled some of Rasha’s stew into his bowl. Everywhere he turned, he could see Rasha’s stew being ladled into bowls. Soon, she was rushing around, taking away the empty pots and bringing in new ones. Kadazar turned to Evening Star.

“How do you eat that salty stuff?” he asked. Evening Star turned around.

“I don’t know. I… I just do. It’s not great, but I’d rather become immune to these diseases.”

Kadazar sighed. She had a point. Reluctantly, he tried another of the salty dishes. After a few bites, he began to get used to the flavour, and found out it was delicious.

Suddenly, a single wispy cloud brushed away to reveal the full moon. Kadazar heard a few gasps and glanced up. The moon was bright red, crimson, and huge, seeming to loom above them. He turned away, not very interested. Star Day was celebrated when the moon was golden, and it had meant to be today. However, it didn’t really matter to him whether the moon was white, red or even green. To Star Tellers, yes, it would be important. But not to him. From the edge of the Ice Cliff Clan Clan’s valley, he heard a noise like the pealing of bells and turned to look at where it came from. Suddenly, everyone around him rose. After a moment of hesitation, Evening Star stood up too, and he followed her lead. They stood in silence for a few seconds. Then a voice rose, loud and clear in the silent night.

“Midnight has struck. It is time for Zhafira to rise.”

At that moment, Kadazar heard the rustle of the deerskin doors to a tent being opened. He turned to find a griffin, her feathers flawlessly coloured in a shade of grey that hinted at silver. She was old, but her eyes gleamed with the fire of youth.

All heads turned.

On her shoulder was a mark.

A small dark star, bold against the silvery feathers.
